How can designers be assisted in creating objects that encourage consumers to build relationships with the objects they own so they want to cherish and keep them for longer?

Enduring By Design Explained

Enduring By Design is a toolkit that consists of themes relating to, narratives, identity, materiality, repairability and evolvability.

The toolkit is to be used by collaborating deign team or individual designers during the ideation and validation stages of a project, to inform their design practice and increase the likelihood that emotion and attachment building qualities are integrated into the end product.

Ultimately facilitating the engagement and use of material and emotional durability concepts in order to positively influence the longevity of new products and service designs.

The Tools

The toolkit works on teaching, providing and facilitating appropriate knowledge, tools and outcomes in order to successfully produce enduring product designs.

The tools included in the kit comprise of an information pack; providing an accessible compilation of the theory and terminology within the fields of interest, and a series of physical tools which accompany this, including a Product Persona Map, The Matrix Map, Timeline and Stimulus Cards.

Designed to be used by designers during the ideation and validation stages of a design project, used as a tool to inform their design practice and increase the likelihood that emotion and attachment building qualities are integrated into the end product. Facilitating the engagement and use of material and emotional durability concepts in order to positively influence the longevity of new products.

Enduring By Design was recognised at the RMIT Industrial Design Graduate Show and awarded a Merit prize for its contribution to the design community.
