Shy Sadie
We often find ourselves, like children, experiencing an innate curiosity and desire to know what lies behind the door or in the drawer, and whilst you know you shouldn’t look, the curiosity overcomes you and you have a little peek, the longer you pry the more suspense builds until you close it again but you only really remember the silhouettes of the things in the drawer or a basic outline of the room behind the door because you only got a glimpse.
The Shy Sadie room divider plays on this childlike curiosity that still lives within us even as adults. Sadie is comprised of a brass frame and floor length fringe. and whilst she might be bold and stand out in a room full of other furniture, that doesn’t mean everything is revealed at first glance.
Between the layers of Sadie’s chic 1920’s inspired dress is a set of transparent shelves. As you walk past you see a glimpse of the objects that line the shelves beneath, but only silhouettes of the objects are revealed.

By introducing a curved frame a pronounced fluidity was introduced, rather than becoming a barricade the piece translates the movement of the space it is situated in.
The fringe curtain is an alternative to the usually solid material that room dividers are made from. The translucent nature of the fringe material allows elements such as light and air to pass through. Designing for these envirnmental elements enhances the theatrical and playfulness of Shy Sadie.
Throughout this stage of the design process I explored different materials including mesh, beads, plastic and fabric. In conclusion of this research I chose a fringe curtain fabric as it is soft natured and easily creates movement. The translucency allows light, but not detailed shapes, to pass through and has a sense of delicateness.
